Holly Ready
Join Maine painter Holly Ready for an “Exploration of Landscape Painting” with an emphasis on how to capture the light. Coming from a long line of family painters, Holly grew up in New England and received her BFA from Maine College of Art. She has worked as a gallery director and has been involved in numerous shows, as well as galleries. Most recently her work was exhibited at the Black Point Inn, Prouts Neck, and the Holly Ready Gallery in Portland, Maine. Holly has taught private lessons and workshops, as well as workshops through Maine College of Art. She is passionate about painting and sharing what she knows. Her fascination with light and color is evident in her landscapes, the subject often being light itself. She is widely collected through this country and abroad. Her painting will be featured on the cover of the revised “Maine, The Pine Tree State”.
This workshop will focus on how to approach the landscape as a subject, how to edit details, and how to depict different aspects of light. Class will include a couple exercises*, one-on-one guidance**, and group critique with an emphasis on how each member responded to the challenge of changing light and effects it has on the landscape. Other than the two exercises mentioned, each participant will have the freedom to work on their own on the grounds or in the studio building. Although Holly paints with oils and gouache, students are welcome to work in the medium of preference: water-based or oil paints, pastels. You should be comfortable in your skill level in your chosen medium.
*We will do a couple exercises for a few hours on the first couple days, one working with limited palette of black and white to mix various values of gray. This will limit us to just shapes and values. On another day we will again limit our palette, only using three earth tones.
**Holly will mingle with students throughout the day and answer any questions they might have with their process.
