Rock Gardens Inn offers a unique setting for our art workshop classes. Located on a private peninsula on Casco Bay, there is a diversity of landscape to inspire and stimulate artists of all levels. Rock Gardens has retained the feeling it had when it became an inn 99 years ago, unusual in today world. There are views on three sides-a tidal cove, a working harbor, and the broad vistas of Casco Bay. There are also many gardens, the colors and images changing with the different months. Most of the classes are held on the property, however, instructors will sometimes choose to spend a day or two painting at some of the scenic locations nearby. Participants stay in one of our ten cottages, and are served breakfast and dinner in our dining room. Lunch is informal and self serve, in the Studio. There are no televisions or telephones in the cottages (there is one of each in the Main House), and cell phone reception is uneven. For those who accompany a participant but are not in the workshop, there is swimming and kayaking available on the property, golf tennis and boating nearby, and many interesting places to visit in the surrounding area.

ARTIST'S RETREAT WEEK: We will open for the 2010 season with this annual retreat for artists. This year we are happy to welcome David Beynon Pena as our artist in residence.  David has taught both landscape and figure painting workshops at Rock Gardens in previous summers.  Mr. Pena is currently on the faculty of the NJ Center for Visual Arts and has taught at the Art Student's League, the National Academy of Design, the Montclair Museum and the School of Visual Arts. This year he will not be teaching as this is a retreat week, but he will be available for assistance in choosing where and what to paint, as well as leading several afternoon or evening group critiques. Participants work on their own and will have full use of the studio building to work inside, as well as the use of the grounds at Rock Gardens. (We ask that artists do not use oil paints inside the cottages.) So come alone, with a friend or group of friends, and enjoy the beautiful surroundings while you give yourself the space and time to do something you love.

This July we are very pleased to welcome two new instructors:  David Dewey and  Frank Webb.

DAVID DEWEY has a long teaching career.  He has taught at Parson’s School of Design in New York City from 1974-1997, the National Academy School of Fine Arts, and most recently at the Lyme Academy College of Fine Arts.  His work is in many major museums as well as public and private collections.  He currently exhibits his work at the Bernaducci-Meisel Gallery in New York City and the Caldbeck Gallery in Rockland, Maine.  His book “The Watercolor Book” was published by Watson-Guptill in 1995 and offers a comprehensive look at the medium of watercolor.  His workshop LANDSCAPE WATERCOLOR WORKSHOP will take place on location beginning with a lecture and demonstration, and concluding with an encouraging review that focuses on: the watercolor medium and materials, on-location painting methods and skills, composition and COLOR.  The expressive power of COLOR is the key focus of all of David’s lectures and absorbing watercolor demonstrations and the primary reason for the great popularity of all of his workshops.
